Workshop 3

“Cadaveric Surgical Workshop on Advanced Flap Reconstruction
for Pressure Injuries: Sacral, Ischial and Greater Trochanteric Ulcers”

Venue: Anatomy Hall, Medical College

Advanced surgical reconstruction is an important component of the multidisciplinary management of complex pressure injuries, particularly when conservative and non-operative measures are insufficient. Appropriate patient selection, wound assessment, surgical planning and flap selection are essential for durable wound closure, restoration of function and prevention of recurrence.
This specialized cadaveric workshop is designed to provide participants with practical exposure to the principles of flap-based reconstruction for pressure injuries, combining focused didactic teaching with cadaveric demonstrations and hands-on surgical anatomy.

  • Comprehensive approach to assessment and staging of complex pressure injuries
  • Understanding surgical indications and patient selection for flap reconstruction
  • Principles of pre-operative optimisation and multidisciplinary planning
  • Detailed review of relevant surgical anatomy and vascular territories
  • Understanding local, regional and musculocutaneous flap options
  • Step-by-step demonstration of commonly used flap rotation techniques
  • Cadaveric demonstration of flap design, incision, elevation and rotation
  • Practical understanding of tissue planes, perforators and vascular pedicles
  • Techniques for achieving tension-free wound closure
  • Principles of dead-space management and wound-bed preparation
  • Selection of appropriate flap according to defect location, size and depth
  • Management considerations for sacral, ischial, trochanteric and other pressure injury
    sites
  • Strategies for preventing flap complications and recurrence
  • Post-operative rehabilitation, pressure redistribution and functional recovery
  •  Interactive case-based discussions with expert faculty
  • Hands-on cadaveric experience to enhance anatomical understanding and surgical confidence

This advanced workshop will be particularly relevant for PM&R physicians, plastic surgeons, general surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, reconstructive surgeons, wound-care specialists and professionals involved in the management of complex pressure injuries.

The workshop aims to bridge the gap between anatomical knowledge, surgical planning and clinical application, enabling participants to understand flap selection and rotation techniques for complex pressure injuries and to integrate surgical reconstruction with comprehensive rehabilitation and recurrence-prevention strategies.
Understand the Anatomy • Plan the Flap • Master the Technique • Restore Function
