Workshop 4

Clinical pearls of NCV–EMG

Venue: Anatomy Hall Ground Floor

Electrodiagnostic medicine is an essential component of modern Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, providing valuable information for the diagnosis, localization, characterization and prognostication of neuromuscular disorders. Appropriate interpretation of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) is crucial for clinical decision-making and rehabilitation planning. This interactive, clinically oriented and practical pre-conference workshop is designed to provide participants with a systematic approach to performing and interpreting NCV and EMG studies, with emphasis on commonly encountered clinical conditions and practical electrodiagnostic problem-solving.
  • Fundamentals and clinical applications of electrodiagnostic studies
  • Understanding the principles of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS/NCV)
  • Practical approach to motor and sensory nerve conduction studies
  • Techniques for identifying and evaluating common peripheral nerve lesions and entrapment neuropathies
  • Approach to radiculopathy, plexopathy, mononeuropathy and polyneuropathy
  • Principles and practical aspects of needle EMG
  • Understanding insertional activity, spontaneous activity, motor unit potentials and recruitment patterns
  • Correlation of NCS–EMG findings with clinical examination
  • Systematic approach to electrodiagnostic localization
  • Differentiating neuropathic and myopathic disorders
  • Practical approach to carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, radiculopathy and generalized neuropathies
  • Recognition of common technical pitfalls, artifacts and interpretation errors
  • Interactive case-based electrodiagnostic problem-solving
  • Live demonstrations and hands-on exposure to NCV–EMG techniques
  • Tips for preparing a structured and clinically meaningful electrodiagnostic report

The workshop is particularly relevant for PM&R physicians, neurologists, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, residents and postgraduate trainees in PM&R and other specialties involved in the evaluation of neuromuscular disorders

The workshop aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical electrodiagnostic skills, enabling participants to approach NCV–EMG studies systematically, recognize important electro-diagnostic patterns, correlate findings with clinical presentation and use the results effectively for diagnosis, prognosis and rehabilitation planning.
